I think it's sorta an earth rotation on it's axis combined with some sort of rotation around the sun.
And then you throw in some mix of Gregorian calendar and that's how you get labels for the months...and then we just make the last Thursday of the month we labeled November "Thanksgiving"...
...which, if I remember correctly, has something to do with Pilgrims getting tired of soccer and wanting to watch American football so the Natives who were here after their boat ride prepared them a dinner so they could sit around the TV and watch the Cowboys play.
All of this is off the top of my head, but I think that should clear things up a bit.
